Birds, Seasons, and Mindful Living
Glow Journal by avian glow
When it comes to living life, do you ever pause for mindful moments? You know, those things that make you smile? So often, those thoughts drift away in the cascades of our minds. Yet they’re worth holding close. They’re part of what makes us us.
Welcome to Glow Journal, a nature spirituality blog by Avian Glow. Here, we explore the connection between birds, the natural world, self-care, and spiritual growth.
Taking a moment to truly be present can make all the difference. Some of the most memorable bird species I’ve seen appeared simply because I stopped and took it all in.
As we lift our heads and welcome the springtime weather, I invite you to do the same. Watch the sunrise, linger with a sunset, notice a lizard scurrying past. Observe the world as if you’re seeing it for the very first time, and then turn that same attention inward. What do you notice?
Mindfulness Practice Inspired by Birds: Sandhill Crane calm
Sandhill Cranes are among the oldest living bird species in the avian world. Across cultures, they are often seen as symbols of longevity and grace.
Try this:
Close your eyes and take three slow, steady breaths.
Feel your feet connected to the earth.
Imagine a Sandhill Crane standing tall and still, unhurried and at ease.
With each exhale, invite that same patience and grace into your body.
Let this remind you: there is strength in moving slowly.
Like the Sandhill Crane, you are allowed to pause and trust your timing.
Nature Symbolism Spotlight
Bud Break - In winter, maple trees lose their leaves, standing bare and quiet. As spring arrives, tiny buds form along their branches, offering early signs of new growth. This moment is called bud break and is a natural part of the tree’s seasonal cycle.
There is something deeply human in this process. We all experience seasons of stillness or feeling stripped back. Growth often begins beneath the surface. Bud break reminds us that rest is part of renewal, and when the time is right, we unfold again naturally.

Seasonal Nature Cue - Lizards
As the days warm, lizards begin to reappear. You may not remember seeing them all winter, yet in spring they seem to be everywhere. Lizards are cold blooded and rely on the sun to warm their bodies. With more sunlight and food available, they are finally able to move and thrive.
Lizards remind us of the importance of rest and timing. They do not force activity before conditions are right. Instead, they wait, watch, bask, and conserve energy until warmth returns.
What do lizards symbolize? Lizards are often associated with regeneration and transformation. Their ability to regrow tails and shed their skin reflects renewal and change.
Personal Reflection
Wow. Hiking any summit is an accomplishment all its own. Recently, a dear friend, the pup Eevee, and I made it to the top of Humphreys Peak in Flagstaff, Arizona, the highest mountain peak in the state.
The hike started off fun, but less than a mile from the summit it became incredibly difficult. The elevation gain felt nonstop. With each step forward, your foot sank several feet into snow while icy wind met your face. More than once, we thought about turning back.
But we did not.
When we reached the top, the tears came easily. The moment reminded me of life itself. There are seasons that feel overwhelming, moments when you genuinely do not know if you can keep going. Then suddenly, you look back and realize you always had it in you. The strength. The determination. The resilience. The ability to persevere.
